All About Health Insurance for Expats

This content is provided by Tenzing Pacific

There have been a lot of questions about health insurance lately, so as Expats HCMC’s trusted insurance broker, we thought we’d put together this post to provide some insight.

As residents of Vietnam, whether you’re an Expat or local citizen, you have 3 core types of providers:

  1. Local Providers

  2. Regional Asian Focused Providers

  3. Internationals

Which one is right for you?

That depends on a wide variety of factors. There’s a lot more to consider other than just price. Just like most things, you tend to get what you pay for. So ultimately it depends on:

  • What’s important to you

  • Age

  • Benefits & limitations

  • Coverage Area

  • Type of provider

  • Quality of provider

  • Deductibles or co-pays

  • Direct Billing options

  • Portability

  • Current health conditions

  • Lifestyle

  • Payment method and frequency

This is why it’s hard to ask strangers “what’s the best provider?” That’s different for everyone as there are so many unique variables that go into a single recommendation.

How much does it cost?

Plans can be as cheap as $100/year to $20,000+. It’s that big of a range based on the criteria above.

Generally speaking for a healthy 35-year old on a regional focused provider, you can expect to pay between $50-$200/month depending on what’s important to you.

Are all providers created equally?

No. Each has their pros & cons. Usually you tend to get what you pay for, just like with most things.

We walk our clients through the options, telling you the good and bad of each to make sure your expectations are in-line with reality from the get go. You may, still, need to make some concessions: pay more, reduced benefits, coverage area, etc.

What providers do you recommend?

Generally speaking, we recommend regional focused providers who offer the best value all things considered:

  • Fair price

  • Appropriate amount of coverage

  • Payment instalments options

  • Offer good user experience

  • Direct billing networks across Asia

  • Portability

  • Good terms & conditions

What’s your overall advice?

Overall, we recommend speaking with an unbiased third party, whether that’s Tenzing or another broker. There are no extra fees and a good broker will give you transparent advice, outlining the pros and cons.

Oftentimes people get oversold or aren’t told key information that is critical for them to know. This can be detrimental to your future user experience and bank account!
