History of Notre Dame Cathedral
Under the Cochinchina Governor Duperré, the church design competition was held with the goal of worshiping, showing off Catholicism and the greatness of French civilization. With 17 design projects submitted, the design with Roman combined with Gothic architectural style by J.Bourad was selected. The church started construction in 1877 and was built in 3 years. In 1880, the inauguration ceremony was solemnly organized by Colombt. On the upper pedestal inside the door of the church, there is a marble board with: the date of commencement, the date of inauguration and the names of the architects. The church at this time was simply named "State’s Church" because it used the State budget to build and manage.
The church built two more bell towers and six large bronze bells in 1895. At the top of the tower there is a large cross. The bronze statue of Pigneau de Béhaine (Bishop of Ardan) was erected in the flower garden in front of the church in 1903 to praise the merits of the French. The monument is placed on a circular cylindrical red marble pedestal and above it is Bishop Adern. Bronze statue cast in France. In 1945, the statue was demolished, but the marble pedestal was still kept.
In 1959 when the statue of Our Lady of Peace was brought to Saigon, the Société d'Entreprises company erected it on that empty marble pedestal. Father Joseph Pham Van Thien wrote the prayer "May Our Lady give Vietnam peace" on that day. With this event, the church was called Notre Dame Cathedral. In December of the same year, the church was promoted to minor basilica. Since then its official name isSaigon Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica. From 1960, the church became the church of the Archbishop of Saigon until now.
