How to get a well paid teacher job in Vietnam

This content is provided by Hoozing

There is no doubt that Vietnam is known to be not only an attractive tourist destination but also a potential market of jobs for foreigners, especially in Ho Chi Minh city. Today, the integration of Vietnam in the global economy will drive the demand for foreign proficiency, especially English. This is a good opportunity for people who are expats in Vietnam and have the intention to start an ESL career to earn money and experience life in a new culture.

  1. Visa requirements and a bachelor’s degree

Most of the time, schools will sponsor work visas for their teacher who must meet certain requirements. When you land a job officially, your employer will tell you all of the things you need to do to get the proper business visa. They will help you to get a tourist visa that will last three months. During that time, your employer will set you up to get your year-long business visa or your 3-year temporary residence card. A teacher must hold citizenship from a major native English-speaking country and most hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university to obtain employment and a work visa to teach English in Vietnam. A criminal background check is also required.

2. Qualifications and experience you need

2.1. English teaching certification

Currently, most centers require a teacher to have a 120-hour TEFL or TESOL class and a certificate in order to teach. If you graduate from the Applied Linguistics Program, you are also accepted. There are plenty of teaching programs that you can consider to complete in your country or even in Vietnam. Beneficially, you will usually get some sort of assistance in finding your first job when doing your TEFL or TESOL. An online TEFL or TESOL course in your country is highly recommended for you to save your money before moving. There are a number of affordable courses available on the internet that you can take into consideration.

2.2. Teaching experience

Besides the teaching certificates, take note that most of English centers also require in-class teaching experience. Some schools may require this before they hire you while ones might ask you to complete the training before you start teaching.

If you have no bachelor’s degree or any qualifications, you should not be worried so much. Because you can definitely find students by becoming a freelance teacher and having private lessons. It will be harder for you to secure a job and you also get lower-paying offers than working in English Centers.

3. Where to find an ESL job?

3.1. Where to go?

The highest concentration of centers is in the two main cities: Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. The cities are developed and have high English education demands where you can be definitely easier to land your job. With the internet, everything has gotten easier, even finding a job. You will normally find numerous job posts on Facebook and by doing a quick Google search. There are some Facebook groups you can consider such as the Expat in HCMC groups or teaching groups in Vietnam to find recruitment information.

Another good method is posting about yourself in the group. Introduce yourself, your qualifications, and what you are searching out. This way, recruiters and administrators of school may find you and possibly contact you despite the fact that they've no longer posted for an opening.

3.2. How much will you be paid?

The salary depends on the city you live in and the teaching center. The average pay is from $15-$25 an hour. You should expect to work from 20 hours to 40 hours per week as a full-time English teacher.
