Four tips to declutter your home

This content is provided by MyStorage

There are several reasons why your home could be crammed with “stuff”. Sometimes, there are things you don’t need just lying around, other times you just can’t decide what to throw out or what to keep; you never really can tell just what might come in handy at any moment and it may be safe to just let them be. It is usually easier to bring things into your home than take them out. It then becomes necessary to declutter at some point; when your home begins to make you feel uncomfortable and even irritated, rather than being a place of relief. Regardless of your reasons, there are several easy ways to declutter your home and free up some space. Decluttering is also a good way to remove the things you do not need from your home.

The process of decluttering involves separating the things you actually need from the other things. There are some who believe you should use the 6-second rule when decluttering. The six-second rule states that if you can't answer why an item is important to you or why you need it around in six seconds, then it most likely needs to be put away.

In this piece, we talk about some trusted methods you can use to create more space in your home.

Get a Recycle Bin

There are definitely recyclable materials in every home. Items such as glass, paper and plastic can simply be put in a recycle bin. Hoarding materials that you no longer have a use for is an easy way to build up a pile of things you do not need. Recycling is a great way to ensure your home is clutter-free. When you recycle, you not only create more personal space in your home, you as well are reducing greenhouse gas emission and contributing a little to saving the planet.

Donate

Donating things you no longer use is a generous way to declutter your space. You can consider it killing two birds with one stone because you declutter and do a good deed all at once. Items you can donate include clothes, shoes, bags and other household items that you no longer use but are still in good condition. These items usually end up in your wardrobes or lying around, you seem to forget about them and soon enough, they become an unnecessary, useless part of your home. However, all it takes is a decision and some time. Decide on what you no longer use; old toys, shoes, clothes, maybe even a bicycle. You’ll never know what’s lying around until you make that decision to check. There are a number of local charities you can donate to. Look for one in your area and give your extra stuff to them.

Have a garage sale

Rather than have things lying around or disposed of, you could make some money off them by having a garage sale! It’s simple, clear out your home, decide what you need (really need) and what you don't. The things you don't need might actually be valuable to someone else at the right price. Invite some of your friends and neighbours for your yard sale, you can make it fun if you want. Put everything you don’t need out and let people pay you to have them. People can always find a better use for them than you and most often then not, they’ll be willing to pay a little for it.

Rent a mini storage

There are memories you can’t simply let go of, these memories exist in your mind as much as they do in photographs and our belongings. Donating every other thing may be hard as certain things hold dear memories so you want to keep them. Sometimes, you can’t be totally sure if you need an item or not. Keeping your items in storage when you are unsure takes it out of your immediate environment but you still have access to it if you need it later on. You want to hang on to them but don't have enough space in your home. Renting storage to keep these items and have access to them whenever you want is definitely the best option. Why throw away years’ worth of memories when you can keep them and still declutter your space at the same time? While some things are best given away, some are best in storage.
